Your words are spirit and life, O Lord!
About two years ago my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer; at the same time my father became sick and passed away and my child was struggling with depression.
During this time I began listening to Christian radio in my car. I needed a positive message in my life as I walked through this time of great sadness.
I had tuned in occasionally before, but now I found that I consistently needed to hear the Word of God through song to penetrate my life more thoroughly. I found myself singing His words of praise in my head regularly, and my positive outlook on life was reaffirmed. I had previously embraced songs from Mass that I loved and sang as I walked daily, but the upbeat tempo of contemporary Christian music stuck in my soul! I could see God working through these musicians to bring light to me and so many others.
God showed me the glory of His Word, and I felt so much better singing words of praise and glory to Him, rather than singing along to the lyrics of “empty” pop songs.
While I am still a huge country music fan, and I enjoy classical and many other forms of music, listening to positive songs of praise consistently turns my mood around when things are not going well.
What the Bible Says about the Power of Praise
Praise him—he is your God, and you have seen with your own eyes the great and astounding things that he has done for you. (Deuteronomy 10:21)
Praise the Lord, all people on earth, praise his glory and might. (1 Chronicles 16:28)
Sing to the LORD! Praise the LORD! He rescues the oppressed from the power of evil people. (Jeremiah 20:13)
Let us praise God for his glorious grace, for the free gift he gave us in his dear Son! (Ephesians 1:5)
