Breath Prayer

Originally published in “A Daily Rhythm Reflection.”

If prayer is our way of conversing with God, then breath prayers are like sitting quietly beside your best friend, simply knowing and appreciating one another’s presence.

One way I’ve practiced this recently is to use breath prayers to remind myself that more important than what God can do for me is who he is. Breath prayers help adjust my rhythm and posture from asking to praising, from needing to being.

On my inhale I identify my needs and on my exhale I transform that into an attribute of God.

It sounds something like this:

Healing (inhale)… Healer (exhale)

Gifts / blessings (inhale)… Giver (exhale)

Help (inhale)… Helper (exhale)

Life (inhale)… Life-Giver (exhale)

Comfort (ihale)… Comforter (exhale)

Safety (inhale)… Protector (exhale)

Needs (inhale)… Provider (exhale)

As I remind myself to praise God first for who he is it becomes easier to rest in him and to trust with confidence that God’s got it. And while I might not always understand how he chooses to answer my prayers, I become newly aware that I am in the presence of the Alpha and the Omega, the creative force behind the universe… the one who knit me together in my mother’s womb, who loves me with an everlasting love and who is working all things together for good for those who love him.

  1. Thank you Nanette! I needed this reminder. It’s far too easy to get wrapped up in my neediness and forget to give my Savior the honor and praise he is so worthy of!
